The entrance to Tallinn’s Old Town from the port was by the “Great Costal Gate”, a 16th century arch, flanked by two towers. The larger tower, the “Fat Margaret” (Paks Margareeta), was a major fortification against the would-be intruders from the harbor. Its size and thick walls were built to impress the visitors from the sea. The tower serves now as the Estonian Maritime Museum.
