A song festival is held in Tallinn in every five years.  The choirs have comprised more than 30,000 singers performing to audiences sometimes exceeding 100,000.  This tradition was born, together with Estonian national awakening in 1869 and kept the spirit of freedom alive during the long Soviet occupation after the Second World War.  During the 1987-91 Singing Revolution Estonians defied the Soviet ban on singing their own songs and helped to bring back the independence.
