Kuressaare castle is one of the best preserved forts in Estonia.  As the inhabitants of Saaremaa put up stiff resistance to foreign efforts to Christianize them, the castle was built during the 14th century by the Teutonic Order to gain control over the island.  It was later modernized by the Swedes until 1706, when Saaremaa became part of the Russian Empire.
