East meets west across Narva River. At left the Herman Castle, initially founded by the Danes in 13th century, stands in Estonia. At right, now in Russia, the Ivangorod Fortress was built at the east bank of the river by Ivan III at the end of 15th century to form a bulwark against the Teutonic Order that dominated the Baltics.
