Remnants from Darkness: Initially a wooden stronghold in Rakvere, a stone fortress was built on this site by the Danes, starting in 1220. It saw several battles, changed hands and was rebuilt more than once. It was seriously damaged in 1605 by the retreating Polish troops and then blasted by the victorious Swedes.
