The Roman 375-feet assault ramp still stands at the west side of Masada. It was built during the siege in the spring of 73 AD and used to breach the walls of the fortress.  The 960 inhabitants, mostly Jewish rebels, who had captured this mountain top from the Romans in year 66 AD, set the place on fire and committed mass suicide.
