Masada is an ancient fortification in Israel overlooking the Dead Sea, visible in the background, some 1500 feet below the mountaintop.  The site was first fortified by King of Judea Alexander Jannaeus in the first century BC.  Herod the Great captured it, built the palaces and improved the fortifications between 37 and 31 BC.
