Ten subspecies of tortoises have survived on Galapagos out of fifteen that existed. Their life spans in the wild exceed 100 years and they can reach weights over 800 pounds. They numbered around 250,000 in the 16th century but declined to about 3,000 in the 1970s. Due to conservation efforts the total number of the species now exceeds 19,000.
