Cape Horn and Drake Passage. Across the southern sea, more than five hundred miles beyond the horizon, is Antarctica. In 1578, after sailing through the Strait of Magellan, the Golden Hinde was blown by storms back around the Cape Horn into Atlantic. Thus, Drake discovered the open-water passageway south of the continent.
