No place in the world matches Tierra del Fuego for the rugged topography so integrated with the sea. Most of the higher peaks, like Mount Buckland in the right foreground, and Mounts Luis de Saboya and Darwin, visible on the horizon, lie on a 100-mile peninsula between the legendary seaways of the Beagle Channel and Admiralty Sound. Darwin himself was drawn to both the “savage magnificence” and the “mysterious grandeur” of the place. Still, the interior of the range wasn’t explored until the 1958 Shipton expedition.
