The Torres del Paine stand in front of the higher Paine Grande. Relative to the high mountains to the north, these peaks have modest elevations. Yet they remain among the most difficult climbs in the world. The South Tower, at 8,207 feet, is the highest, with the central spire being only slightly lower. The 7,415-foot North Tower was one of the great prizes of climbing when first ascended by British climbers Chris Bonington and Don Whillans in 1965.
