Paine Grande (10,050 feet), seen here in the foreground, is a huge mountain capped by weird snow mushrooms. At right are the lower yet more dramatic central and south towers. Like a fortress repelling intruders, Grande is also guarded at its base by a steep wall of several thousand feet and an upper glacier that threatens the cliffs below with avalanche.
