Once numbering as many as fifty million in Patagonia, the guanaco population has dwindled to around fifty thousand. Now around three thousand guanacos dwell under the protection of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile; their numbers have risen dramatically in the last few decades, a tangible and gratifying reward of conservation efforts.
