The mountaineer is accustomed to looking up and out, not down and in. Volcano climbing changes all of that. Volcano climbing is probing the vent where the earth communicates with the sky. Here, Popocatapetl, east of Mexico City, spews heat and sulfuric fumes. About 1,300 volcanoes, most of them less known, punctuate the Pacific Coast of the Americas from the Aleutian Islands to Patagonia.
