17,781-foot Popocatepetl (Aztec for “Smoking Mountain”) rises through the clouds near Mexico City. One early visitor to its summit was Hernan Cortez, whose men replenished their supply of gunpowder by gathering sulfur from the crater. The peak remains armed: eruptions began again in 1994, leading to the evacuation of nearby villages.
