Perhaps the loneliest summit of all is the tiny square atop the Totem Pole in Monument Valley. Not only is the tower accessible only to high-tech climbing methodology, but it is also sacred ground for the Navajo who prohibit climbing. Still, viewed from afar, it is an enduring symbol of the West.
