Even iconic Mount Rainier (14,409 feet) has the potential to erupt. A short 5,000 years ago, boiling mudflows reached present-day Tacoma and Seattle. The mountain, seen here from tranquil Paradise Meadows, continues to vent sulfuric heat, forming odd summit ice caves.
