In the far northwest of the United States is a line-up of volcanoes including Washington State’s Mount Baker, 10,781 feet, as seen from Mount Shuksan. Baker and its neighbors, Saint Helens, Rainier, and Hood, give aspiring alpinists a taste of the high glacial mountains and a reminder that the earth is a bubbling and dynamic place.
