It’s early morning on Knik Glacier near Mount Marcus Baker above Prince William Sound. The glacial world looks smooth and benign from far. For the mountaineer it is a struggle of wallowing in deep snow, baking in the sun that reflects mercilessly from the white surface, wandering lost in the fog, or worse, stepping into the lethal trap of a hidden crevasse.
