It must have been one of those rare clear days when in 1741 Vitrus Bering first saw Mount Saint Elias, rising 18,008 feet beyond the Maluspina Glacier. The glacier itself is every bit as grand as the mountains that rise all around — an ice sheet nearly the size of Rhode Island, oozing steadily downhill and carrying debris from the mountains toward the sea.
