Nature’s patterns repeat on both tiny and grand scales. What look like microscopic worms on a glass tray are really stranded meanders and ox-bow lakes seen from high above. Despite this wet appearance, the North Slope is technically a desert in terms of rainfall. It’s the permafrost that prevents drainage and sculpts such unique landscapes.
